Nevada Assemblyman Blasts Local Activist Over "Pork" Charge

When Battle Born News founder Eric Odom posted "Assemblyman Ty Cobb Wants Pork For Breakfast," bemoaning the fact that the Reno republican was proposing to spend $300,000 for a Veterans Guest House and closing with a not-so-veiled threat at the safety of the AD-26 freshman's job, he probably thought that was the end of it. Just another clever blog post that goes unchallenged.

He was wrong.

In an email interview, Cobb not only explains the details of the Veterans Guest House program but also addresses Odom and his charges. And, it's safe to say, he pulls no punches.

"Mr. Odom should spend some time in a war zone before he criticizes expenditures on behalf of our troops," said Cobb. "I think that it is pretty obvious why his wife left him when he can't find sympathy for veterans. But then again, I'm not a 'real conservative' with my past votes and refusal to raise taxes."

As for Odom's "(He) had better tread carefully. You never know who will jump in the race against him next time around" warning, Cobb isn't exactly worried.

"I look forward to him or his friend Mr. (Richard) Disney running against me again. Considering that Disney received slightly over 1% of the vote against me in the last election, I'll be sure to accord him the appropriate amount of attention."

In that highly contentious and nasty AD-26 GOP primary, many believe Odom and Disney were behind an anonymous attack site that made numerous false accusations against Cobb.

But what about the actual issue that started it all -- the alleged "pork"?

"The Veteran's Guest House is a private non-profit that provides a home for veterans and their families to stay when they're being treated at the VA clinic in Reno. The one-time $300,000 appropriation to eliminate their mortgage is a grant that requires them to match the money before they get it- a fiscally responsible way to eliminate their debt so that they can provide a public service with private money in the future," explained Cobb. "This is the type of expenditure from our $500 million surplus that conservatives should applaud because it creates no bureaucracy and helps fill a void for our brave troops."

What? Does Cobb actually think I'M going to run against him? Wow! He really is more naive than I originally thought.

I hear Sharron Angle and Don Gustovson are looking for action up there in Reno. I would hate to be Cobb right about now.

Good post!

Wow. Taking a shot at Eric's relationship with his wife was just pathetic. It speaks volume for his character and temperment if he can't take critisism for his politics without resorting to personal shots.

With all due respect, Ty Cobb has every right to get personal after what he went through during the election. I know "Eric had nothing to do with it," but Eric did help the Cobb Gobbler get started and wished it had been him. I'm sure that admission wasn't lost on Ty.

It's no surprise that Ryan would come to Ty's rescue. Ryan is usually there backing anyone who doesn't really stand for Republican values. It's always been that way. Nothing new.

That being said I know full well why Cobb is pissed. We've made him squirm since day one.

But it does show how quickly he loses his cool. This post will be quite useful in the future.

Zuccato - I was also thinking "pathetic" and "it speaks volume for his character". Of course that was after reading your racist tirade against latinas on your blog. I liked how you jumped to the most racist possible conclusions from one simple observation. Even better was the revised version after you took down the original. You would think if someone was going to do a chicken move like that they would cut out the bad parts.

Congratulations you have now joined Odom and Disney as the Three Amigos of Nevada Blogging. Oh wait, Amigos is spanish! How about the three stooges.

I am being called a chicken by anonymous poster. Isn't that almost the definition of irony.

And by the way, I joined Odom and Disney a long time ago. Whether you agree with them or not, both of those men spend a lot of time trying to do what's right and fighting for what they believe in. More than can be said for someone who hides behind the cloak of anonymity.

You would think if someone was going to do a chicken move like that they would cut out the bad parts.

I would agree that leaving it down was a chicken move. That's why I put it back up and I am standing in the line of fire. You should try that sometime, standing for something instead of hiding namelessly.

I am standing for something. I am standing up against racists that somehow are under the delusion they are standing up to the fire.

What fire Todd? In your post, repost and numerous comments you just make it worse. Maybe you could have gotten away with an excuse that you were writing on emotion, but you keep going there again and again. That can only lead to one conclusion Todd.

Eric, I believe he was talking about Disney riding again.

As for Angle and Gustavson, I think they may have each burned their bridges with GOP supporters. Angle's election result lawsuit against Heller was a needless distraction that Republican diehards won't forget. And Gustavson's poor campaigning against Debbie Smith in 2004 won't help him, along with the carpetbagger charge he would face if he changed districts.

And, besides, what would they attack Cobb on with this? "Cobb supports veterans, we don't" doesn't sound like a winner.

Todd, the post on your Winco visit did go over the top. Let's face it, the fact that you originally took it down shows even you were (hopefully) uncomfortable with it.

And just because someone is anonymous doesn't automatically make their point invalid. I'd like to think there are a few anons out there who occasionally make some sense.

Todd has put up an apology about the post mentioned in this thread. It can be read here.
